An investigation into the alleged slapping of a teenage boy by a police officer
The Ernakulam Rural Police have launched an investigation into an incident in which a sub-inspector at Njarakkal police station allegedly slapped a teenager.
Allegations have been made by the family of a woman summoned to the station in connection with a missing gold chain case. Her 16-year-old grandson, who was accompanying her, was allegedly slapped when he tried to explain that his grandmother was hard of hearing when a police officer questioned her.
But the police rejected the accusation. The woman was summoned after another woman complained of losing a gold chain near the Nayarambalam bus stand. Witness statements and CCTV footage allegedly showed the elderly woman picking something up from the ground, police said. However, the woman claimed to have picked up a ₹50 note which had fallen from her hand.
The family also accused the police of unauthorized checking of their mobile phones. Incidentally, CCTV footage of the woman being questioned was not available. Police sources said the gold chain remains missing and allegations from both sides are being investigated.
