US-Iran news LIVE: JD Vance says talks with Iranians set ‘good foundation’ for deal to end US-Iran war | Today’s news

US-Iran News LIVE: US Vice President JD Vance, who was in Switzerland for US-Iran talks, said on Monday that his lengthy talks with senior Iranian officials had laid “a good foundation for a successful final deal” as they seek a permanent end to the war the US and Israel began in late February. Vance and US officials claimed progress had been made on several fronts, including creating “mechanisms” to keep the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global energy supplies, open, and to address fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, where there appeared to be a truce.

Iran ready for ‘major weapons inspection’ to ensure ‘nuclear honesty’, Trump says

US President Donald Trump on Monday reiterated Vice President JD Vance’s assertion that Tehran is ready to accept large-scale weapons inspections as part of a broader diplomatic effort following recent talks between Washington and Tehran in Switzerland as part of a 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU). In a Truth Social post, Trump said: “Everyone is fully aware that Iran will agree to major weapons inspections to ensure ‘nuclear honesty’ long into the future.”

Strait of Hormuz administration will never return to pre-war situation: Iranian official

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who attended the US-Iranian talks in Switzerland, praised the negotiating team for lifting the naval blockade through diplomatic channels, adding that “the administration of the Strait of Hormuz will never return to the pre-war situation”. He said: “We have been and are distrustful of the American people, and it is a reasonable condition that we will continue to be distrustful.”

Ghalibaf also added: “If we wanted to do it by military means, naturally it would be war and cause damage; but you saw that the blockade was lifted overnight.” Referring to the Israeli government, he said: “The Zionist regime is strongly against the negotiation process because it sees its own destruction in this path and wants to sabotage it.”

Iran’s oil waiver offers Tehran support during negotiations

Washington issued Tehran with a 60-day license allowing the Islamic Republic to sell oil on the international market, giving the country an economic lifeline as the two sides continued talks on a lasting peace deal.

After years of tough sanctions and the promise of a reconstruction and development fund, Iran has welcomed a waiver to allow energy sales. Still, Tehran has indicated that it will not let up on its use of leverage on Hormuz if Israel continues to fight in Lebanon, Bloomberg reported. When Trump was asked about the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil, the US president appeared to confuse the question with the future release of Tehran’s frozen assets. When pressed further on how he could ensure that Tehran does not use oil profits to rebuild its military, he said: “They should not do that,” adding: “They should use the money to buy food for their people because right now their people are very hungry.”
