Poet P. Narayana Kurup is no more

Eminent poet P. Narayana Kurup died at the age of 92 on Saturday. He was honored with the Padma Shri in 2022. Mr. Kurup lived at Peroorkada in Thiruvananthapuram. His famous collections of poetry include Asthramalyam, Hamsadhwani and Nishagandhi. He is the author of more than 40 books, including important critical works and translations.

Mr. Kurup is the recipient of several prestigious awards including Kerala Sahithya Akademi Award, Odakkuzhal Award and Kerala Panini Award. Born in 1934 in Harippad, Mr. Kurup started his teaching career in 1956. Later, in the early 1970s, he worked in the State Language Institute. He also served as Vice President of Sanskar Bharati, Agra. Mr. Kurup is survived by wife Vijayalakshmi and children Vrinda Jayakumar, Viju Narayan and Vivek Narayan (Editor-in-Chief, Network18).

In a condolence message, Governor Rajendra Arlekar said that Narayana Kurup was a rare genius who deeply absorbed the great traditions of Malayalam literature and left an indelible mark in poetry and literary criticism.

Chief Minister VD Satheesan said that Mr. Kurup had given new dimensions to Malayalam poetry and literary criticism. Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan also condoled the death. Cremation will be held at Santhi Kavadam on Sunday at 3.30 pm.
