Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo each scored twice before substitute Crysencio Summerville added a late fifth as the Dutch moved to the top of the group with four points and a commanding goal difference. It was a sobering night for Sweden, who arrived in Houston full of confidence after beating Tunisia 5-1 in their opening match. Graham Potter’s side created chances throughout the match and finished with more shots than the Netherlands, but a combination of wasteful finishing and an inspired performance from goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen ultimately proved costly.
Brobbey and Gakpo put the Dutch in complete control
The Netherlands couldn’t have wished for a better start. Just five minutes into the game, Cody Gakpo dropped down the left wing and found space behind the Swedish defense before drilling a low cross across the face of goal. Brian Brobbey anticipated the delivery perfectly, reaching the far post to convert from close range to give the Oranje an early advantage.

Sweden tried to respond through Alexander Isak and Dejan Kulusevski, but the Dutch remained dangerous whenever they moved forward. Their second goal came in the 17th minute, again coming through Brobbey. Denzel Dumfries charged forward from the right and fired a dangerous diagonal pass into the penalty area. A slight deflection onto the wrong foot of the Swedish defense and Brobbey was quickest to react and poke the loose ball past Kristoffer Nordfeldt to complete his brace.

Despite being two goals down, Sweden enjoyed long periods of possession and territory for the rest of the first half. Isak, Viktor Gyökeres and Emil Forsberg found promising positions, but Verbruggen repeatedly denied them with a series of crucial saves that preserved the Dutch advantage heading into the interval.

Any hopes of a Swedish comeback were effectively extinguished immediately after the restart.Just two minutes into the second half, Dumfries were again the providers. The full-back found space on the right and fed a cross that picked out Gakpo, who directed a level volley into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

Seven minutes later, Gakpo scored the goal of the match. He won possession on the left wing, cut inside sharply, bypassed two Swedish defenders and sent a powerful low strike from the edge of the area that flashed into the near corner beyond the reach of Nordfeldt.

Sweden fights back, but Verbruggen stands firm
To their credit, Sweden refused to give up. They finally found a breakthrough in the 59th minute after winning the ball in midfield and starting a quick transition. Isak raced forward before slotting a perfectly balanced through ball into the path of Anthony Elango who calmly slotted past Verbruggen to reduce the deficit to 4-1.

The goal started Sweden’s best period of the match. Potter’s side pushed forward aggressively, attacking the line and pushing the Netherlands deeper into their own half. Isak became the focal point of almost every Swedish move, while Kulusevski repeatedly slipped inside from wide areas and tried to unlock openings.Sweden eventually finished the contest with 20 shots compared to the Dutch’s 12 and scored nine attempts on target. However, Verbruggen produced one of the best goalkeeping performances of the tournament so far, making seven saves, including a save from Gyökeres from close range and several saves to deny Isak.

As the pressure mounted, Koeman responded by introducing more defensive reinforcements, moving the Dutch into a more compact formation. Virgil van Dijk and Stefan de Vrij dealt comfortably with increasingly desperate Crusaders and Sweden’s long-range efforts, frustrating the Scandinavians as the clock ticked down.
Summerville completes a statement of victory as the picture of Group F changes
Any lingering Swedish hopes vanished in the closing stages. In the 89th minute, substitute Crysencio Summerville collected the ball outside the penalty area, switched to his stronger foot and curled a superb strike into the top corner to cap off a night to remember for the Oranje.

The final statistics underlined the unusual nature of the competition. Sweden had 48 percent possession, outshot the Netherlands 20-12 and forced Verbruggen into seven saves while Nordfeldt had to make just one. Still, the Dutch converted five of their seven attempts on target and showed a level of clinical finishing that Sweden could not match. The result dramatically reshapes Group F. The Netherlands move to the top of the table with four points on a healthy +4 goal difference after scoring seven goals in their opening two games. Sweden remain second with three points despite seeing the significant goal difference they built up against Tunisia wiped out.For Koeman and the Netherlands, qualification for the round of 32 is now assured and attention can begin to shift to top the group. Sweden’s fate remains in their own hands, but Potter’s side will need a response against Japan on the final matchday after suffering their first setback of the tournament.
