TMC’s Saayoni Ghosh denies alleged property links to Mamata’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee, warns of legal action | Today’s news
Trinamool Congress MP Saayoni Ghosh on Wednesday warned of legal action against those spreading “fake news” about her alleged links to a Kolkata property linked to Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee.
The TMC-run Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has sent notices to many properties associated with the party’s national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee asking for approved building plans and related documents for verification, according to PTI citing sources on Monday.
Ghosh headed to X and said, “I just saw a couple of attackers that one Abhishek Banerjee & Sayani Ghosh jointly own a property namely 19 D Seven Tanks Road, Kolkata 700030 with no mobile number as a contact. I can’t say who it is, but it’s definitely not Sayani Ghosh and people who started with an insignificant and meager base for me with no profit. I’m grateful.”
“I want my constituents to know that my assets have been declared in my election affidavit. Check the records. For those trying to slander me without any evidence – STOP NOW!” she continued.
The TMC MP added, “Please know, I will not back down an inch, I will not let this pass. Legal action will be taken for spreading fake news. This ‘Ghosh’ will not be bullied.”
The move comes just days after the BJP formed the government in West Bengal, ending the TMC rule in the state that began in 2011.
According to senior civic officials, notices have been issued for 17 to 21 properties allegedly owned or associated with Banerjee, his relatives and the company to ascertain whether the structures are in compliance with the plans approved by the corporation.
Minister of State for Urban Affairs and Urban Development Agnimitra Paul said Banerjee, widely regarded as the second most influential leader of the Trinamool Congress, was “not above the law”. She also claimed that authorities have identified several properties associated with Trinamool leaders that may have been built illegally.
Referring to notices issued by the KMC, Paul claimed that several properties associated with Abhishek Banerjee, his family members and Leaps and Bounds were being investigated.
“Bring the plans. Otherwise we will act. You are not above the law,” she said, adding that the notices were issued as part of a drive against alleged unauthorized construction.
Reacting to the reports, Firhad Hakim, Mayor of Kolkata and Trinamool Congress MLA, said he was not aware of any notices sent by the civic body to Banerjee.
“According to the KMC Act, we are the policy makers and I have no knowledge about that,” he mentioned.
According to the report citing sources, the properties under investigation include Abhishek Banerjee’s residence at 188A Harish Mukherjee Road, a neighboring building at Kalighat Road and several other premises located at Premendra Mitra Sarani, Panditiya Road and Ustad Aamir Khan Sarani.
Civic officials said the notices were issued under Section 400(1) of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980, which empowers the civic body to seek clarification on suspected unauthorized construction and gives property owners an opportunity to present their side.
The notices require approved building plans and other construction-related documents, along with clarification that all required approvals have been obtained for building changes or additions, including the installation of elevators and escalators.
BJP civic body chief’s alleged bounty on Saayoni Ghosh
Pradeep Dixit, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) municipal president from Sikandrabad in Bulandshahr, was accused in a viral video of the announcement ₹1 million reward for beheading Saayoni Ghosh. He later denied the accusation, saying the clip was from Sunday’s parade and that the video had been manipulated using AI before being shared online.
The controversy arose after Hindu groups raised objections to Ghosh’s alleged social media posts related to Lord Shiva and Shivling, which they said offended religious sentiments, leading to protests in Sikandrabad. Dixit reportedly claimed that he had made no such statement.
