The doctor, who turned 100 on Friday, donated ₹ 3.4 crore of her savings to the All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar for research into gynecological malignancies.
Professor K. Laxmi Bai, who graduated in medicine in 1945, had donated the amount earlier in May this year. The unique contribution was celebrated on Friday on her centenary. Indian President Droupadi Murma also appreciated this gesture.
Professor Laxmi Bai, a renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist, retired in 1986 from the Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur.
Executive Director Dr. Expressing gratitude on behalf of AIIMS, Ashutosh Biswas said, “Professor K. Laxmi Bai’s extraordinary gesture is not only a blessing but also a strong recognition of AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s continuous efforts in high quality patient care, medical education and advanced research.”
According to AIIMS, the donated amount will be established as a corpus fund, the interest of which will be used for research into gynecological malignancies, providing community-based oncology services to the poor and downtrodden, and strengthening preventive oncology initiatives.
To ensure optimal and transparent use of the corpus, an expert supervisory commission was created under the chairmanship of the executive director, the institute said.
As part of the centenary celebrations, a team from AIIMS Bhubaneswar visited Professor Laxmi Bai at her residence in Berhampur. On behalf of the institute, they expressed their gratitude and heartily wished her on her 100th birthday.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar said it deeply appreciates the trust reposed by Professor Laxmi Bai and reiterated its commitment to excellence in healthcare, compassionate services and advancement of medical research for the benefit of society.
Thoughtful Gesture: The President
“Happy 100th birthday to you! May you be blessed with sound health and a peaceful life. I have come to know that you have recently made a significant contribution from your savings to the noble cause of starting a gynecological oncology course at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. This is a very significant step towards the empowerment of women and I deeply appreciate your thoughtful gesture,” Ms. Bammu Professor wrote in a letter to Ms. Bammu.
“Governments are working to provide accessible and affordable healthcare to all. I am confident that the participation of generous citizens like you will inspire others to come and support government initiatives,” she said.
“I understand that you have always worked for the empowerment of girls and women during a career spanning nearly four decades. Your life is a shining example of how education can benefit an individual and who in turn can bring about positive change in society,” the president wrote.
