Forum seeks probe into ‘irregularities’ in Sanskrit university

The Save University Campaign Committee (SUCC) has written to Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar, who is also the chancellor of state universities, to investigate alleged irregularities in financial matters and faculty appointments at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS), Kalady for the past 10 years.

SUCC urged the governor to commission the Comptroller and Auditor General to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the alleged irregularities. Some of the irregularities mentioned in the letter submitted to Mr. Arlekar include misuse of funds, appointment of faculty members (permanent and visiting faculty members), admissions to PhD and other programs and alleged corruption in the construction of the student center and auditorium in the main campus.

Meanwhile, members of the Left-affiliated Syndicate have sent a letter to Vice-Chancellor (VC) Cize Thomas urging her to immediately convene the Syndicate, claiming that it was last held in February 2026. University authorities have denied this, saying the last meeting was held on April 16, 2026.

The members alleged that the VC made the appointment of visiting faculty without seeking the Syndicate’s approval. The university authorities rejected the accusations, pointing out that the process took place according to the norms prescribed by the University Grants Commission and after evaluating the qualifications of the applicants.

RS Sasikumar, president of SUCC, alleged that members of the Left Syndicate were against the appointment of guest faculty as they were unable to recruit persons of their choice.
