Shreyanka Patil ruled out of T20 World Cup, India names leg-spinner as replacement

India suffered a major setback in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 when Shreyanka Patil was ruled out of the rest of the tournament with an ankle injury. The all-rounder sustained the injury during India’s Group A match against the Netherlands on Wednesday.

On the opening delivery of the sixth overShreyanka’s trip took a painful turn. Service around the wicket, the off-spinner bowled one to middle stump which Phebe Molkenboer worked into the leg side. After the opening stop at midwicket failed to completely cut off the run, Shreyanka chased the ball down on her own. As she bent to pick it up, she lost her footing and landed heavily, sustaining injuries.

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Event Technical Committee has approved leg-spinner Prema Rawat as Patil’s replacement in the Indian team. Rawat, who was already in England as part of the India A set-up, will now link up with the senior team for the rest of the tournament.

“The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Technical Committee has approved Prema Rawat as a replacement for Shreyanka Patil in the Indian squad. Rawat was named as a replacement after Patil was ruled out following a right ankle injury sustained in the match against the Netherlands on Wednesday,” an ICC statement said.

Although the 24-year-old is yet to make her international debut, she has earned plaudits with strong domestic performances. She impressed in the Women’s Premier League before playing in the Women’s Asia Cup Rising Stars competition where she took eight wickets for India A at an average of 9.62.

In three matches during the 2025–26 season for RCB, Rawat picked up two wickets at an average of 8 and economy rates of under 6.

Patil’s latest injury comes just months after she returned to international cricket following an earlier layoff. She featured in India’s opening World Cup win over Pakistan, finishing with figures of 0 for 17 from her three overs.
