On the occasion of Constitution Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the framers of India’s Constitution on Wednesday, describing the document as one that “attaches supreme importance to human dignity, equality and freedom”.
Prime Minister Modi called on Indians to reiterate their commitment to strengthening constitutional values and also released a lengthy letter highlighting the “greatness of our Constitution”.
“November 26 is a day of immense pride for every Indian. It was on this day in 1949 that the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution of India, a sacred document that continues to guide the nation’s progress with clarity and conviction. Therefore, almost a decade ago, in 2015, the NDA government recalled how the NDA government decided to celebrate November 26 as its government.
“It is the strength of our constitution that has allowed a person like me, coming from a humble and economically disadvantaged family, to serve as Prime Minister continuously for over 24 years. I still remember the moments in 2014 when I first came to Parliament and bowed, touching the steps of the largest temple of democracy. Again, in 2019, after the election results in the Central Hall of the Constitution, I bowed The Constitution. My forehead as a sign of respect gave a few others like me the power to dream and the power to work on it,” commented the Prime Minister on his journey from humble beginnings to the leader of the world’s largest democracy.
“On Constitution Day, we remember all the inspirational members of the Constituent Assembly chaired by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, who contributed to the framing of the Constitution. We commemorate the efforts of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who chaired the Drafting Committee with remarkable foresight. Several eminent women of the Constituent Assembly have written that they further enriched the Constitution and honor the thoughtful vision of the PM who helped frame the document with his thoughtful perspectives.
