Monsoon Update | Advance to East India likely in next 4-5 days, says IMD | Today’s news
The southwest monsoon will advance into Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and parts of Chhattisgarh in the next four to five days, the India Meteorological Department said on Thursday, as nearly two-thirds of districts continued to report deficient or severe rainfall till mid-June.
Data for 1-17 June showed 239 rain-deficient districts and 230 rain-deficient districts out of 741 districts, a slight improvement from the previous day’s 245 rain-deficient and 214 rain-deficient districts. The monsoon, which arrived in Kerala on June 4 three days behind schedule, has so far covered Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, most of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha and Jharkhand and the entire Northeast.
Delayed and uneven progress comes in the background El Niño year, with the IMD predicting total rainfall for the season at 90% of the long-term average – a below-normal forecast that has raised concerns about agricultural production and water availability.
The IMD said heat waves are likely in several parts of the country in the coming days: Bihar, coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Odisha on June 18; East Uttar Pradesh during 18–24 June; Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada, Telangana and Vidarbha during the 18th–20th centuries. June; West Uttar Pradesh during 19–24 June.
Elsewhere fresh A Western Disturbance is likely to cause widespread rains in Northwest India between 18th-22nd. June, with hailstorms in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during 18–20 June. The Konkan and Goa coasts are expected to experience widespread monsoon rains by June 24, while northeast and southern peninsular states are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during the week.
Parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala will continue to receive heavy rainfall during June 18-24, the IMD added, saying isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during June 18-23, while Assam and Meghalaya are likely to experience very heavy rainfall during June 19-22.
