A book written by HS Sreemathi, a women’s studies scholar, and two books authored by linguist KV Narayana were released at a program organized by Bahumukhi, a literary forum, in Shivamogga on Thursday.
Streevadi Sahitya Vimarshe Mattu Kannada Sahitya Sandarbha written by Ms. Sreemathi and Kannada Nuri Rachane and Hosa Odugarigagi Kuvempu written by Mr. Narayana.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Sreemathi said that questioning patriarchy should not be interpreted as questioning men; instead, it was a way of understanding the dynamics of patriarchy. “At some point in the evolutionary process, men dominated women for reasons specific to that time. We need to understand why the dynamic never changed after that, even though men and women are equal in every sense,” she said.
Her book, the author stated, was an attempt to find answers to her questions about feminist criticism. “Feminist literary criticism is not just a discussion of literature, it is an academic activity that exposes the fact that literary texts, as products of a system, justify and reinforce patriarchal thinking and aspirations,” she said.
KV Narayana said that the ideas he proposed about the structure of the Kannada language in his book Kannada Nudi Rachane were completely different from what had been discussed so far. In addition, he used a different terminology to analyze language structure. He used new terms for words like – vakya (sentence), vyakarana (grammar) – and based his arguments on language through the concept of explanatory adequacy, elaborated in his work.
His next book on Kuvempu’s Speeches and Essays was an attempt to understand the writer with regard to the time of his writing and the present.
Prof. Rajendra Chenni, Emeritus Professor of English, has published books. Prof. Sabita Bannadi, Prof. Meti Malikarjuna and vl Narasimhamumurthy, writer and critic, Talked about the published books. Brvikanthe God, IGP (Easern Range), was present on the programme.
