The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has given in-principle approval for the creation of two new specialized cadres for greater centralization.
These cadres come under its Indian Audit and Accounts Department (IA&AD) and will be called Central Revenue Audit (CRA) cadre and Central Expenditure Audit (CEA) cadre.
“This reform, which will come into effect from January 1, 2026, aims to build deeper expertise and further improve the quality of audit of central government finances,” the CAG said in a press release.
Currently, the audit of central revenue and expenditure is carried out by multiple agencies with staff control dispersed among multiple state civil audit offices, leading to fragmentation. The new cadres will merge more than 4,000 audit professionals out of a total of 42,000 CAGs.
This measure will also help reduce reliance on deployment and manage the workforce more flexibly.
