A. Sabu, Member Secretary, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, has rejected his nomination as a representative of the University of Calicut Senate to the selection committee for the search and selection of the new Vice-Chancellor (VC).
Mr. Sabu reportedly communicated his decision to the university registrar’s office.
This came after Governor and Chancellor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar constituted a search committee including Eluvathingal D. Jemmis, Professor, Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, as the chancellor candidate and Ravindra D. Kulkarni, VC, University of Mumbai, University of Mumbats.
Reports said Mr. Sabu cited professional commitments for declining the position. He was nominated by the Senate at a meeting held on October 30. Earlier, the Senate had elected Dharmaraj Adat, former VC, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, as its nominee in a special meeting on August 23. However, he also rejected the proposal. Although the Senate reconvened on September 11, a decision remained elusive. It is not yet clear whether Mr Saba’s decision to step down will stand up to legal scrutiny, as the chancellor had already set up a panel before he made the move.
