Heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Montha in the Nallamala forest range triggered landslides and flash floods in smaller streams in the ranges cutting off the Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple in Srisailam. Transport facilities to the temple have been cut off from Telangana and also from Dornala in Prakasam district.
However, the temple management ensured that the devotees did not face any inconvenience and provided food and refreshments.
Atmakuru Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ramanji Naik said heavy rains and huge inflows into streams at several places led to traffic disruption. “As water is flowing dangerously at Ligala Ghat, we have asked the Telangana police to stop traffic from that side. We are coordinating with our counterparts,” he said.
Similarly, water is gushing on the Dornala-Srisailam, Pedavagu route and traffic has been stopped at Dornala itself. Landslides were reported at some places between the Dornala and Sunnipenta stretch, apart from spilling streams and creeks.
In Pathalaganga near Srisailam, boulders fell on three shops causing damage. Landslides were also reported near the Srisailam dam lookout and Lingalagattu.
Srisailam Temple Executive Director M. Srinivasa Rao said they distributed ‘annaprasadam’ to stranded devotees at Shikhareswaram and also at the bus stand. Mr. Srinivasa Rao said that traffic to Srisailam was stopped due to rain and they arranged for free distribution of food and refreshments to the devotees. Pulihora (lemon rice), upma, sambar rice and curd rice were served to the devotees.
Speaking to the devotees, Mr. Srinivasa Rao asked them to follow the instructions issued by the police and district administration while returning to their places whenever traffic resumes.
