Curaçao’s historic strike stunned Germany
Curaçao became the smallest country to ever appear at the tournament in their first World Cup match and enjoyed a dream moment as Livano Comenencia made history. After Felix Nmecha gave Germany an early lead in the 6th minute, Comenencia fired a left-footed shot across the crowded penalty area to make it 1-1 in the 21st minute. The goal was Curaçao’s first ever at the World Cup and briefly raised hopes of an upset as Dick Advocaat’s men frustrated the Germans for much of the opening half.“Even though it wasn’t me, I felt like it was me, it was all of us, the whole island, everyone,” Curaçao winger Jearl Margaritha said after the match. “We screamed our lungs out. So we were happy.”However, Germany’s superior quality eventually revealed itself. Defender Nico Schlotterbeck restored the lead in the 38th minute with a header from Nathaniel Brown’s corner to end Curaçao’s brave fightback after the sides were level on 17 minutes.Kai Havertz then converted a penalty in first-half stoppage time after Felix Nmecha was brought down in the box to give Germany a commanding 3-1 advantage going into the break.
Havertz doubled Germany’s strength to declare victory
Julian Nagelsmann’s side wasted little time after the restart. Jamal Musiala extended the lead just two minutes into the second half before Brown got on the scoresheet in the 68th minute.Deniz Undav added another in the 78th minute and Havertz completed his brace with two minutes remaining to cap off a dominant performance to give Germany a six-goal winning margin.“We really needed this convincing win,” said Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann. “We needed that confidence. It was there, but it definitely grew.”Nagelsmann admitted his team faced a difficult challenge against an opponent who was under little pressure.“One team has very high expectations and the other team doesn’t, and that’s a little bit tricky,” he said.

The Redemption Mission begins on a positive note
Germany entered the tournament looking for redemption after suffering back-to-back group stage exits in Russia and Qatar and Sunday’s emphatic result provided the ideal start to their campaign.“We have to show the fans that we can play and we have to have confidence,” Nagelsmann said. “We’re in a better place than we were going into this game.Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, returning to international football after nearly two years away, made one save in front of 68,021 fans at NRG Stadium in Houston.Germany will next face Ivory Coast in Toronto, while Curaçao will look to build on a historic night when they face Ecuador in Kansas City.
