Amado Diallo’s late dagger helps Ivory Coast to a 1-0 win over Ecuador
For almost 90 minutes, Philadelphia belonged to Ecuador. The streets around the stadium were painted yellow and blue, the chants rarely stopped and thousands of fans believed their side had done enough to get the 2026 World Cup off to a positive start.
Then Amad Diallo arrived with a reminder of football’s cruelest truth.
IVORY COAST VS ECUADOR, FIFA WORLD CUP 2026: HIGHLIGHTS
The Manchester United winger struck in the 90th minute to give Ivory Coast a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador, silencing a stadium that for much of the evening looked more like Quito than Philadelphia.
The result leaves the Elephants level on three points with Germany at the top of Group E after the four-time champions beat Curacao 7-1 earlier in the day. It was a painful end to a match for Ecuador, in which they hit the woodwork twice and looked for a long time for a side likely to score.
The defeat was particularly cruel given the atmosphere their supporters created. Several thousand Ecuadorian fans gathered at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Saturday before taking over large parts of the city on match day. In the hours before kick-off, yellow jerseys dominated the streets and parking lots around the stadium. The support continued inside the country, where Ecuador comfortably outplayed the orange-clad Ivory Coast fans.
At full-time, however, football brought another reminder that atmosphere alone does not win games.
AMAD MAKES THE LAST FLEECE
The match looked set to become the first goalless draw of the tournament.
Ecuador had opportunities to avoid this result long before Amado’s winner. John Yeboah rattled the crossbar with a powerful strike in the 24th minute and Alan Minda repeated it six minutes later. The South Americans carried the greater threat throughout the opening half and would have been unlucky not to go into the break with the lead.
Even Ivory Coast had its moments.
Elye Wahi hit the woodwork in the second half, while Seko Fofana and Franck Kessie added energy and physicality in midfield. However, the two sides continued to lack the finishing touches needed to separate.
Just when the game looked destined to end level, Wilfried Singo burst forward to find Amado on the edge of the box. The winger needed just one touch to create space before curling a pinpoint finish into the corner, sparking wild celebrations among the Ivory Coast players.
IAN DIOMANDE SHINES BRIGHTLY
While Amad grabbed the decisive goal, much of Ivory Coast’s attacking spark came from Ian Diomande.
The youngster consistently troubled Ecuador’s defense and looked particularly dangerous when he ran straight at Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie. His pace and directness created some of Ivory Coast’s most promising moments.
His biggest opportunity came in the 58th minute when he brilliantly eluded two defenders before firing over from a promising position. Although he didn’t find the net, Diomande’s display offered further insight into why he is regarded as one of the brightest talents this side of the Ivory Coast.
The win gives Ivory Coast an early spot in Group E and sets up a thrilling clash against Germany, who opened their campaign with a commanding 7-1 win over Curacao. With both sides on three points, their next meeting could decide the top spot in the group.
Ecuador, meanwhile, will be wondering how they came away empty-handed after hitting the woodwork twice and carrying much of the attacking threat. Their focus now shifts to Curacao, where anything less than three points would put serious pressure on their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages.
