The Assam government has decided to request the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to set up a fast-track court for Zubeen Garg’s death trial.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters on Thursday (Oct 16, 2025) that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case is confident of filing a charge sheet by the first week of December, though the police have 90 days by law to do so.
“Courts usually take time to deliver judgments, but people want justice quickly. The Cabinet has therefore decided that the Chief Justice will be contacted so that we get a speedy trial once the charge sheet is filed,” he said.
He further said that the government decided to appoint a special public prosecutor after consulting with the state attorney general. From the filing of the indictment to the announcement of the court’s verdict, the case will be worked exclusively by a special public prosecutor.
Meanwhile, the government has set up an 11-member committee to convert the site where Garg’s last rites were held into a permanent ‘samadhisthal’ (memorial). The committee has the singer’s wife Garima Saikia Garg and Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is expected to visit the Sonapur site on Friday. The chief minister welcomed the visit but criticized Gandhi for the delay.
