Meta reportedly plans to flood its social media platforms with artificial intelligence (AI) robots that will act as regular accounts. According to the report, the tech giant is introducing AI-driven characters that can publish, share, like and perform other activities that human users can do. These AI bots are said to be added to Facebook and Instagram. It is worth noting that the company added the feature to enable users to create AI roles last July, however, this feature is currently only available in the United States, and the characters created cannot be published.
According to a report from the Financial Times, the social media giant is trying to integrate AI into its platform in different ways. It has introduced Meta AI Chatbot, AI writing tools, AI avatars for influencers and creators, and more in Instagram DMS. Now, Connor Hayes, vice president of AI products at Meta Generation, told the publication that AI-powered user accounts are the next step for the company.
“We want these AISs to actually exist on our platform over time, just like the way it is explained.” According to reports, when explaining the vision, he added that these AI accounts will have A profile similar to a human account that contains BIOS and profile pictures. They will also be able to generate and share AI content on these platforms.
Hayes reportedly said Meta has priority projects that could make its platform “more entertaining and attractive”, possibly due to rising competition between Tiktok and X (formerly known as Twitter). The company is said to have decided to add more AI tools that can improve engagement and interaction on meta-owned social media applications.
However, experts also reportedly highlighted several negative consequences of the move. Such problems include the risk of spreading misinformation, which may see snowball effects due to the large number of AI accounts powered by prone AI models.
Another problem is that low-quality content is flooded with the platform given the lack of real creativity in current AI models. It may also keep users away from Facebook and Instagram if the overall quality of content drops.
