After nearly 18 months of surveillance across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Maharashtra, Telangana’s EAGLE Force busted an inter-state network of marijuana smugglers, arrested five persons and seized 200 kg of contraband worth around ₹ 1 trillion.
The arrested accused have been identified as Amol Nanoba Gore, 35, and Laxman Nagnath Kare, 26, both of Latur district in Maharashtra, Vasantha Jadhav, 40, of Kamareddy district, and Shaik Ansar, 32, and Shaik Rahmath, 30, both of Kamareddy district.
Police have identified Prabhu from Udgir in Maharashtra as the alleged financier and consignee of the consignment, while Devi Singh from Odisha is the supplier. Both are on the run.
According to EAGLE Force Director Sandeep Shandilya, the operation started with intelligence about the activities of some of the accused, including Amol Gore, who was earlier arrested in a marijuana-trafficking case in Nalgonda district, where 336 kg of contraband was seized.
“Teams started discreet surveillance on June 7 and tracked the suspects as they traveled to border areas, allegedly collected contraband and started their return journey to Telangana and Maharashtra,” the officer said.
Instead of immediately intercepting the vehicles, the EAGLE teams continued to track them at long range to identify the entire network and confirm the shipment’s movement. “The operation culminated in Khammam area where our officers assisted by Konijerla Police and Khammam EAGLE unit intercepted vehicles and seized 104 packets containing 200 kg of marijuana,” the director explained.
Investigators suspect that the network had previously transported shipments of marijuana and was preparing to deliver the latest shipment to Maharashtra. The investigation revealed that the alleged financier coordinated the purchase, shipping and payments through a network of associates spread across multiple states.
Police said efforts are on to nab the absconding accused.
