The National Office for Crime records (NCRB) said in its report that in 2023 10,786 farmers and agricultural workers committed suicide, and most of them came from Maharashtra (38.5%), followed by Karnataka (22.5%). Farmers’ organizations accused Narendra Modi’s government policy for the situation and stated that the decision to give up the customs duty would stiffen the situation because most suicides were still from the country’s cotton belts.
Of the 10,786 suicides from the agricultural sector, 4,690 farmers or cultivators and 6,096 agricultural workers were. The suicides on the farm were 6.3% of total suicides (1,71,418 suicides in 2023) in the country. Of the 4,690 farmers who committed suicide, 4,553 were men and 137 women to 6,096 suicide of agricultural workers were 5,433 men and 663 women.

In the commentary on NCRB Data, President All India Kisan Sabha Ashok Dhawale said that in 2021, 2022 and 2023, more than 10,000 suicides were reported, and this showed the systemic crisis that the Narendra Modi government could not grasp or fight.
“This crisis will deteriorate because a large number of farmers’ suicide are held in the cotton and soy belt. Maharashtra has proved to be a cemetery of farmers. Marathwad and Vidarbha region, and for US governments, it bowed that the government that is enhanced is that the government is enhanced.
