₹ 2.5 lakh school trip to Japan, ₹ 90,000 to Goa, ₹ 19,000 shoes: Cost of 8th grader in Gurgaon goes viral | Today’s news

Amid online chatter about the rising cost of living in parts of India, a social media user spoke about the expenses of a class 8 student and left many on the internet divided. Talking about the rising cost of extra-curricular activities for school-goers and the expensive lifestyle of Gurgaon, one woman said that the increasing financial burden of raising a child has led many families to opt for one child.

Gurgaon Student Lifestyle Cost

User @alkagurha took to X, formerly Twitter, to share details of a conversation she had with a friend about her son in grade 8, suggesting the rising cost of raising children in the country. In her post, she revealed that her boyfriend had been on a spending spree recently 2.5 million on her son’s school trip to Japan. In addition to the travel expenses, the student was allegedly provided with an additional allowance of 50,000 for shopping activities during the visit.

According to the post, the student also purchased limited edition designer shoes worth 19,000 from Japan.

“Friend paid 2.5 lacs for his son’s school trip to Japan. Class 8. Plus 50k extra for shopping. Bought limited edition designer shoes for 19k in Japan,” she wrote.

90,000 for a trip to Goa

However, spending on recreational activities does not end there. The user further claimed that the same family spent time in the area 90,000 for a three-night trip to Goa for their son just three months ago, with no other expenses.

Referring to these expenses, @alkagurha asked if it is surprising that many parents today are consciously choosing to have only one child. “3 months ago she paid 90k for Goa, 3N, plus cash for expenses. Is it any surprise people only have one child?”

Netizens react to expensive trips

The post drew mixed reactions from the internet. While some pointed to the importance of extracurricular activities for the student, such as travel, some argued that this could have been avoided.

Among them, one user wrote in the comments: “I don’t know the footwear part. But to experience another country that is culturally different in standard 8 is amazing and frankly he wants it.”

“Families who can spend that money on one child can easily afford another. It’s the people who can’t afford it who suffer,” commented another.

One said: “Why a school would take a 12-year-old on an international field trip is ridiculous.”

Another claimed: “No wonder kids these days don’t bat an eye when they spend such horrendous amounts of shopping money. I can’t blame them.”

“Gurgaon lifestyle is expensive”

Another pointed out, “Easy money. Hard earned money doesn’t flow like that! Relax, he is paying for his past deeds,” to which the user clarified, “No sir, it’s not easy money. They both work very hard. She is an interior designer and husband in an MNC. Life style in Gurgaon is expensive.”
