Foreign Minister Vikram Misri confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will first focus on the SCO plenary meeting before meeting with President Putin.

“Tomorrow, the Prime Minister will focus on the plenary session of the summit, where he will outline the Indian approach to supporting regional cooperation in the SCO umbrella. After this engagement, he is scheduled for a bilateral meeting with President Vladimir Putin Russia after going to India,” Misri said on Sunday.
The meeting assumes meaning because it comes at a time when India is under the persistent pressure of Trump’s administration to reduce the purchase of Russian oil.
It will be the first personal meeting of Narendra Modi and Vladimir Putin after the second US Presidency Trump. Both leaders last met on the edge of the BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024.

While India has not yet passed US tariffs, it has tried to strengthen its friendship with Russia and in recent weeks to recalibrate its ties with China.
Jaishankar of Foreign Minister met his Russian counterpart in Moscow 22 August. MODI-XI MEET
The Modi-Putin meeting is scheduled for the day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the edge of the SCO leaders. This was their first meeting after the BRICS summit in Russia Kazan in 2024.
PM Narendra Modi later joined the official acceptance of the summit organized by President XI in Tianjin Meijiang International Convention and Exhibition Center. He was warmly welcomed by Xi JinPing and his wife Peng Liyuan before joining other world leaders for group photography symbolizing regional unity.

Putin also took part in the official reception together with the higher members of his delegation, including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk, Vice -President of Maxim Oreshkin, Aide Yury Ushakov and presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Tass.
The meeting assumes importance because it comes at a time when India is under the tireless pressure of Trump’s administration to reduce the purchase of Russian oil.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that PM Modi invited Xi Jinping to the BRICS summit that India would host in 2026.
President XI thanked PM Modim for the invitation and offered support to the Chinese Indian Presidency BRICS.
