2 children died when a wall collapsed in heavy rain

Two children were killed and another sustained serious injuries after a retaining wall of a makeshift food stall collapsed amid torrential rain at Sanchakkadav in Kasaragod district on Saturday evening (June 6).

The deceased have been identified as Munsir, 9, and Musammil, 14. The brothers reportedly ran a small makeshift food stall during the holidays to earn a meager income.

The incident took place around 5pm when their 14-year-old neighbor Wahash arrived at the stall. A brick retaining wall behind the shop suddenly collapsed after incessant heavy rain, trapping the three children under debris, mud and rocks.

Preliminary findings indicate that the wall, which was part of a recently built house, has weakened due to soil erosion and heavy water flow caused by the ongoing downpour.

Residents and rescue workers rushed to the spot and pulled the children out of the rubble before taking them to the Cherkala Cooperative Hospital. However, Munsir and Musammil succumbed to their wounds. Wahash, who sustained serious injuries, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kasaragod.

Adoor police have registered a case and started investigation into the incident.

A red alert remains in effect in the district.
