The Pakistan Cricket Board is considering axing Test coach Sarfaraz Ahmed, captain Shan Masood
After Bangladesh lost 0-2 recently, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering sacking Test team head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and captain Shan Masood.
PCB sources informed that the board held talks with former players Younis Khan and Muhammad Hafeez and asked them to take up some key posts in the national team.
“I can confirm that Younis Khan and Muhammad Hafeez have both been in talks with PCB officials to join the board in key positions. But things are yet to be finalised,” the source said.
He said PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s advisers had suggested a reshuffle of Pakistan’s Test squad after defeat against Bangladesh.
“There is a proposal to remove Sarfaraz from the post of head coach and hand him back the responsibility of managing the national under-19 and A teams,” the source said.
He said Sarfaraz could face sacking only if the board could come to an agreement with former captain Younis, who in the past had followed certain strict conditions for accepting any post.
The source said that the management is definitely considering replacing Masood as Test captain, though he has asked for more time to lead the team in the upcoming series against the West Indies and England.
He said Hafeez was considered to step in as chief selector and also head the international cricket department, but only initial talks had taken place between him and board officials.
“In the case of Hafeez, there is a feeling that since the former player has been quite critical of the team and his management in the media could create the impression that he has been offered a position to stop his criticism,” the source added.
