Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono arrived in the national capital to co-chair the 8th meeting of the India-Indonesia Joint Commission along with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

“(The meeting of the India-Indonesia Joint Commission) is being held after four years… In those four years, we have made good progress in our bilateral relations,” MEA Jaishankar said during a meeting with Mr Sugion. He mentioned that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held “fruitful discussions” during Mr. Prabowo’s state visit to India ahead of the 76th Republic Day celebrations in January 2025.

In an effort to further strengthen the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sugiono, is set to hold major bilateral talks aimed at expanding the scope of cooperation across multiple strategic sectors, an official statement said.

The Foreign Minister, accompanied by the representative of the lower house of Indonesia, Marlyn Maisarah, leads a high-level delegation to the country’s capital. The highlight of the visit is the meeting of the Joint Commission (JCM).

The meeting serves as a platform for the two nations to assess progress on the commitments made during the state visit of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in January 2025. The current discussions are a direct follow-up to the recent meeting on May 14, when Jaishankar met Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugion in the country’s capital ahead of the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting.

India and Indonesia – the two largest democracies in Southeast and South Asia – have seen their ties blossom since the relationship was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018. This latest visit comes at a crucial time for regional cooperation, with both nations actively participating in various ASEAN-led mechanisms and initiatives, such as the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (202306).
