Could Portugal’s Rafael Leao miss World Cup after fistfight with Chile defender?
Portugal forward Rafael Leao could find himself at the center of unwanted disciplinary pain just days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup after he was sent off for violent conduct during his team’s international friendly against Chile. While the AC Milan winger is certain to miss Portugal’s final warm-up game against Nigeria, uncertainty remains as to whether the ban could extend to the World Cup itself.
Leao was shown a straight red card in Portugal’s 2-0 win over Chile after getting involved in a heated argument with defender Ivan Romano. The incident has now left Portugal awaiting a disciplinary decision from FIFA before the World Cup opener against DR Congo on June 17.

RAFAEL LEAO THROWN THE NOTEBOOK AND THIS FIST WAS CLOSED
Rafael Leao received a straight red card for punching an opponent in Portugal.
He cannot pass a character test before being transferred to Galatasaray.
But there are teams that include characterless people. June 6, 2026
The flashpoint came just before half-time after a routine challenge in which Joao Cancelo and Chile right-back Felipe Faundez were close to the corner flag. What initially appeared to be a minor skirmish quickly escalated as players from both teams stormed the area.
Leao and Roman soon became the central figures of the skirmish. The Portuguese winger traded shoves with the Chile defender before appearing to punch him in the face. Referee Luca Zufferli intervened immediately and after a short evaluation of the situation, immediately drew red cards for both players.
Even Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo tried to defend Leao, but the referee remained unmoved. Leao was forced off the pitch moments before half-time as Portugal eventually secured victory with goals from Goncal Guedes and Bruno Fernandes.
The dismissal has now raised questions over whether the AC Milan star could be unavailable when Portugal begin their World Cup campaign in Houston later this month.
Lea’s red card was issued for violent conduct, which is considered more serious than the standard suspension for a professional foul or reckless challenge.
According to reports, the winger repeatedly pushed Roman during the confrontation before appearing to punch the Chile defender during a melee. The referee called the incident serious enough to award a straight red card.
As a result, Leao will automatically miss Portugal’s final World Cup warm-up game against Nigeria on June 11.
Bans received in international friendlies are usually served in subsequent friendlies. However, FIFA’s disciplinary regulations allow for additional sanctions if a player is sent off for rough play or violent behaviour.
With this difference, the availability of the Leao World Cup is now under scrutiny.
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez will be hoping FIFA sees the incident as an isolated moment rather than behavior worthy of a longer ban, especially given Lea’s importance to the national team.
The 26-year-old is expected to play a key role alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva as Portugal look to make a deep run in North America.
WILL RAFAEL LEAO BE SUSPENDED FOR THE WORLD OPENER?
At this stage, there is no confirmed FIFA decision regarding Leao’s participation in the World Cup.
The matter will likely depend on the referee’s report and whether FIFA’s disciplinary committee decides the incident warrants further punishment beyond an automatic one-match ban.
In most cases, red cards received in friendlies do not carry over into official competitions. Recent examples suggest that suspensions are usually limited to future friendly devices.
However, violent behavior is treated differently under FIFA regulations.
As Leao was dismissed for an alleged act of violence and not a routine football offence, FIFA has the power to extend the suspension to competitive matches if it deems the incident merits more severe sanctions.
Should that happen, Portugal could be forced to start their World Cup campaign without one of their most dangerous attacking players.
For now, though, Leao remains available for Portugal’s Group K matches against DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia, unless FIFA announces otherwise.
