Praggnanandhaa describes the Norwegian triumph as the biggest win of his career

R Praggnanandhaa capped a remarkable week by winning Norwegian Chess 2026, becoming the first Indian to win the prestigious title since the tournament’s inception in 2013. After securing the championship, the Indian grandmaster described it as the biggest achievement of his career, citing the strength of the field and the presence of world number one Magnus Carlsen as factors that made the triumph particularly memorable.

The title was made even more remarkable by the strength of the competition, with all six players in the Open section rated above 2700 and world number one Magnus Carlsen between participants.

“I think this is like the biggest win of my career. It was also stronger in terms of average rating. In tournaments like Wijk Aan Zee, you have some 2600 rated players, but here it’s only the best players,” Praggnanandhaa said after securing the title.

Praggnanandhaa’s triumph was built on resilience. After a tough start to the tournament, the teenager responded with four straight wins to finish on 18 points. He defeated seven-time champion Carlsen twice along the way — a rare feat against one of the greatest players in chess history.

“So to win this one is extra special plus Magnus added to that. He’s also won four matches in a row. So this one definitely comes at the top,” he added, referring to his stunning late surge that helped him win the title.

The title was confirmed after Wesley So failed to record a classic victory over Alireza Firouzja in the final round, leaving the Indian in control of his own destiny against Vincent Keymer. Norwegian chess champion Praggnanandhaa was overwhelmed by fans (Photo screengrab from X/ @ChessbaseIndia)

FANS MOB PRAGGNANANDHAA IN OSLO

The celebrations extended far beyond the ballroom. As As Praggnanandhaa left the venue after his headline performance, fans in Oslo gathered around young champion, eager to congratulate him on his historic achievement.

Despite the long and emotionally draining tournament, Praggnanandhaa patiently stopped to interact with almost everyone who approached him. Smiling for photographs, signing autographs and exchanging words with supporters, he had an unforgettable moment that reflected his growing popularity on the global chess circuit.

The warm welcome served as a fitting end to a breakthrough week for the Indian star, whose victory over a world-class field further cemented his status as one of chess’ brightest young talents. With the World Rapid Team Championship in Hong Kong later this month, Praggnanandhaa plans to take a short break before returning to competition and will be confident in what she calls the most special title of her career.
