776 not enough? Sooryavanshi in tears after Rajasthan’s IPL 2026 ended in heartbreak
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could not contain his emotions after Rajasthan Royals’ IPL 2026 campaign ended with a heartbreaking defeat to Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 on Friday. The 15-year-old was seen in tears in the RR dugout as the reality of the loss sank in in what was otherwise another remarkable individual performance.
The youngster, who has been the face of Rajasthan’s campaign this season, sat quietly in the dugout at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. Gujarat completed a seven-wicket victory to book their place in the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Television cameras later captured several Rajasthan Royals teammates trying to console the teenager. Ravindra Jadeja was among those who came to Sooryavanshi, while members of the support staff, including team manager Romi Bhinder, also consoled him. At one point, Sooryavanshi appeared to shield himself from the cameras with a towel as he fought back tears. Sooryavanshi left in tears after RR’s exit from IPL 2026. (ScreenGrab: JioHotstar)
The emotional scenes came shortly after the youngster once again made his mark for Rajasthan Royals in the knockout game.
Sooryavanshi made a brilliant 96 off 47 deliveries, innings that helped RR post a challenging total of 215. The left-hander again displayed the fearless batting that has defined his season, recovering from a relatively quiet start against Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada before taking control of the contest.
For a brief period it looked like he would complete another century. Instead, he suffered the frustration of falling in the nineties for the third time in his last four IPL innings.
Unfortunately for Rajasthan Royals, even 215 proved insufficient.
Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan formed one of the best opening partnerships of the season as they put on 167 runs in just 77 balls to take the game away from RR. While Sudharsan played the aggressor for large sections of the stands, Gill anchored the chase brilliantly before bringing up a stunning century off just 47 deliveries.
The Gujarat skipper remained in complete control as the Titans chased down the target with seven wickets in hand, ending Rajasthan Royals’ hopes of reaching a second consecutive IPL final.
HOW VAIBHAV SOORYAVANSHI FINISHED IPL 2026
While the defeat ended Rajasthan Royals’ title challenge, it did little to dampen what was one of the biggest breakthrough seasons in IPL history.
Sooryavanshi finished IPL 2026 with 776 runs from 16 matches at an average of 48.50 and a staggering strike rate of 237.31. He ended the season in an orange cap and established himself as the biggest story of the tournament.
The numbers tell only part of the story.
During the season, the teenager broke several IPL and T20 records while dissecting some of the world’s best bowlers. He smashed centuries against elite attacks, dominated established international stars and repeatedly produced match-winning performances despite being just 15 years old.
Among the records Sooryavanshi broke during IPL 2026 were:
- Fastest batter to 1000 IPL runs balls (440 deliveries)
- Second fastest batter to 1000 IPL runs by innings (23 innings)
- First batsman in T20 history to score 500 overs in a single tournament
- Most powerplays in a T20 tournament, breaking David Warner’s previous record
- One of the highest scoring seasons by a teenager in cricket history
- Finished with 776 runs at a strike rate of 237
- Hit 65 sixes during the season, the most by any batsman in a single IPL campaign
Still, none of those numbers seemed to matter Friday night.
For all the records, sixes and milestones, the image that will linger from Rajasthan Royals’ exit is that of a tearful 15-year-old boy wondering what more he could have done.
