39 Amarnath pilgrims injured in road accident in Kashmir

About 39 pilgrims returning from Amarnath Yatra were injured in a road accident in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Tuesday (July 27, 2026).

The incident happened around 5:30 am. A bus full of pilgrims skidded off the road and plunged into a low-lying area near the S-Mode Ganiwan area of ​​Ganderbal’s Gund area, local residents said. Initial reports indicated that the driver of the bus, registration number AR11 D5655, lost control near Ganiwan before plunging into a ditch.

Locals joined the security forces to rescue the trapped pilgrims, who included women and children. “39 pilgrims returning after Darshan from Baba Barfani sustained injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) (in Srinagar). I have directed the health officials to provide all necessary assistance and best possible medical care,” J&K Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha said.

Officials said several of the injured suffered head injuries in the crash. Mr Sinha also spoke to Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal and health officials. The police will investigate the cause of the accident, officials added.
