Flying Squad Wing of Forest Department on Wednesday detained three women from Tamil over for an attempt to sell pink rings (Psittacula krameri) in IDUKKI. According to Idukki Flying Squad Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) MG Vinod Kumar arrived three women early in the morning by bus from Pollachi in Tamil Nadu to Kattapana in IDUKKI, which bears birds hidden in cages. They planned to sell parrots in Kamakshi and Prakash near Kattappana.
They were arrested as the inhabitants of Pollachi Jaya Veeran (50), Ilavanchi Annadurai (45) and Usha Chandrasekharan (41).
“A total of 139 birds were found in the cages. Six of them were found dead. They planned to sell a couple for 2,000 GBP. Parakeets with a pink ring are listed according to Annex II of the Act on Wild Animals, 1972.
The official further stated that most people do not realize that breeding parrots with a pink ring is a forbidden act. “Women are part of a gang that sells birds in different areas and buys them from local birds hunters in Pollach,” said Mr. Kumar.
According to officials of the Ministry of Forest, the birds will be released in the forest areas of the Idukki district after the health inspection.
Women were detained after Tip-off received DFO IDUKKI Flying Squad. The operation was conducted by the officer of the flying series T. Litesh, the officer of the forest section (SFO) Saji Thomas and defeated the forest officers (BFO) Sreekumar, Shinoj Mon, Josekutta and Rince Antony.
