New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani was sworn in for the second time as mayor by Sen. Bernie Sanders at noon Thursday (local time) in the presence of his wife, Rama Duwaji.
The event comes after a more private midnight swearing-in that took place in a disused New York City subway station below City Hall.
After swearing in Sanders, Mamdani paid tribute to the veteran leader, saying Sanders is a leader he wants to emulate.
Mamdani also praised Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, who said, “You paved the way for this moment.”
NYC’s first-millennium South Asian and Muslim mayor even reached out to people who didn’t vote for him, saying, “While only actions can change minds, I promise you this: if you’re a New Yorker, I’m your mayor.”
This is a developing story. Check back later for more updates.
