New York’s lawmaker Zohran Mamdani, the assumed democratic nominated to the mayor of New York, condemned President Donald Trump on Tuesday (July 1) and called them an attack on democracy.
“His statement is not only an attack on our democracy, but an attempt to send a message to any New York who refuses to hide in the shadow: if you speak, they will come for you. We will not accept this intimidation,” Mamdani said shortly after Trump’s notes.
Trump threatens cuts and financing
Trump, who previously spoke in the newly opened centers of migrants “Alligator Alcatraz” in Florida Everglades, warned that Mamdani would face the consequences if resistant to federal immigration.
“Well, we’ll have to arrest him,” Trump said as he asked Mamdani’s promise to “stop the masked ice agents in the deportation of our neighbors.”
The President went further and described Mamdani as “Communists”, which is a claim that he repeated for several weeks.
“Look, we don’t need the Communists in this country, but if we have it, I will watch it very carefully on behalf of the nation,” Trump said.
Trump also revived the unfounded accusation of Mamdani’s citizenship status: “Many people say they are illegally here,” Trump said. “We’ll look at everything. Ideally, it turns out to be much less than the Communist. But he’s a communist right now. He’s not a socialist.”
Earlier Tuesday, when he left the White House, Trump told reporters, “I think I will talk to him and watch him because he has to come directly through this building to get his money.” He also threatened to detain federal financing from New York if Mamdani “does not do the right thing”.
“I’m not a communist”
In an interview about the NBC Mamdani, he rejected Trump’s designation.
“I’m not,” he said, asking if he was a communist. “I had to start getting used to the fact that the president would talk about what I look like, how I am, from who I am from. In the end because he wants to turn away from what I am fighting for.
Primary Results and November Elections
The New York election Council published updated results with a selection on Tuesday, showing that Mamdani holds a 12-point lead over former governor Andrew Cuomo-56% to 44%-in a democratic primary.
The current mayor Eric Adams plans to run as independent. The elections of the mayor in New York are scheduled for November 4.
