Brendan Taylor was officially added to the Zimbabwe team for the second test against Newzealand after his three and a half years of ICC suspension 25 July 2025. Captain Craig Ervine confirmed Taylor’s return and praised his determination and intensive preparation that he had undergone in eight to twelve months.
Now 39, Taylor last represented Zimbabwe in September 2021. Its departure came in the middle of personal challenges, including the unsuccessful approach to adjusting the struggle and using addictive substances, which led to its suspension.
“I certainly thought it was all done, but here I am – and it is a stunning feeling of gratitude. I have to grip myself a little to realize that I was actually here. I soaked everything and accept it every moment. It’s just nice integration,” Taylor said in a statement.
“Last year and a half he certainly devoted himself to my return. I said a huge amount of work – from fitness to the technical side to food – and I feel much slimmer, fitter and mentally stronger. This was only because of soberness.
During his test career, Taylor performed in 34 matches, average 36.25 and scored six centuries, including an unforgettable undefeated 105 against Bangladesh in 2011.
Its return brings rich experience and leadership when Zimbabwe is preparing for a busy test plan and looking forward to hosting the ODI World Cup 2027.
The second test starts on August 7th in Bulawayo in Queen’s Sports Club.
