‘Zero track at all’: Kevin Pietersen explodes as Jofra Archer faces IPL opposition

Kevin Pietersen Jofra Archer (Image Agency) Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has backed the players to balance IPL commitments with international cricket amid mounting criticism over Joffrey Archer’s absence from England’s first Test against New Zealand. The debate gained momentum after Archer stayed with Rajasthan Royals for the IPL 2026 play-offs instead of returning soon to join the England Test team. The fast bowler’s franchise campaign ended only last Friday when Rajasthan were knocked out by Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2, leaving him with little time to prepare for the opening Test at Lord’s starting on Thursday.Archer’s decision drew criticism from several former cricketers, including Michael Atherton and Simon Doull, who questioned whether franchise commitments were placed ahead of representing England in Test cricket.Pietersen, however, had a different opinion. While the former England captain has previously emphasized the importance of international cricket, he argued that many former players are not in a position to judge the choices faced by modern cricketers as they have never experienced the opportunities created by the IPL.When he got to X, Pietersen strongly defended the current players and suggested that some of the criticism lacked perspective.

“Ex-cricketers who have never played/benefited from the IPL using some pretty damning language on the current players playing the IPL are simply clueless. Zero clue at all! But let them be… I SUPPORT THE PLAYERS!” Pietersen wrote on X.The comments came as debate over Archer’s availability continued to dominate cricketing circles in England. Temper remained with Rajasthan Royals throughout their playoff run as the franchise sought a place in the IPL finals. Although Rajasthan’s campaign eventually ended in Qualifier 2, Archer failed to return in time for the first summer Test in England.England captain Ben Stokes also came to Archer’s defence, urging critics to consider how much the cricket landscape has changed in recent years.Speaking to reporters at Lord’s ahead of the Test, Stokes acknowledged the frustration surrounding Archer’s absence but insisted comparisons with previous generations of players were not entirely fair.“I totally understand people’s frustration around this, but there’s another side to it,” he said.“A lot of it has to do with the landscape of cricket and where it is at the moment. A lot of the points people make around Jof and that situation are to do with the landscape when they were playing. But it’s completely different now. There are opportunities for cricketers now where there weren’t 10, 15, 20 years ago,” he added.Archer’s decision came after an exceptional IPL 2026 season with Rajasthan Royals. The fast bowler was instrumental in the franchise’s progress to Qualifier 2, finishing third in the Purple Cap standings with 25 wickets in 16 matches and establishing himself as one of the competition’s most influential bowlers.
