Rarely have Chennai Super Kings appeared so fragile at the start of a season. While the five-time champions typically take the field carrying the weight of high expectations, that hope now appears to be evaporating, even among the franchise’s staunchest faithful. Chennai have endured bad starts in the past but have never been overcome so comfortably.
Three games resulted in three complex strikes at the hands of Bengaluru Royals, Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings. As a result, they sit as the only team yet to open their account in IPL 2026.
The fortress is not only under siege; it falls The Super Kings, who have lost their last six matches at the iconic Chepauk, welcome the injured Delhi Capitals on Saturday.
on paper, Capital letters look much more menacing and rounded. They opened their campaign with two dominant victories, including a clinical performance against Mumbai Indians. However, Delhi will arrive with their own scars after failing to chase down 211 on the batting belt against Gujarat Titans on Thursday. That loss followed a rare brain fade in the final from David Miller, who otherwise played heroically.
In contrast, there has been no such drama in Chennai of late. They head into Saturday night’s clash after a much-needed five-day break to reset their tactical plans.
MATCH DETAILS
CSK vs DC is the second match of IPL 2026 Saturday doubleheader which will be held on 11th April. JioHotstar will provide the live streaming while the telecast will be hosted by Star Sports.
HEAD TO HEAD
Delhi Capitals have won 12 and lost 19 out of 31 matches against Chennai Super Kings. Significantly, they beat CSK in Chepauk last year, ending a 15-year drought at the venue.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Chennai Super Kings are desperate for a spark of inspiration. With back-to-back home games against Delhi on Saturday and Kolkata on Tuesday, this stretch is likely to define their entire campaign.
Much to their relief, South African batting sensation Dewald Brevis is expected to return. ‘Baby AB’ missed the opening three games due to side strain suffered in training. Brevis provided the firepower the Super Kings lacked last season and was earmarked to be the face of CSK’s structural pivot from ‘Dad’s Army’ to a younger core. His absence was keenly felt during a winless opening run. Head coach Stephen Fleming spent much of Friday’s press conference criticizing his job security and the team’s form. Although he has stopped short of formal confirmation, Brevis is widely tipped to feature on Saturday. Will Brevis comeback help CSK bury their dismal start to IPL 2026? (PTI photo)
Conversely, MS Dhoni is unlikely to field. Although he trains hard in the Chennai nets, The legendary wicketkeeper-batsman is expected to be sidelined with a knee injury until Tuesday’s clash with the Knight Riders.
While the return of Brevis offers optimism, it is up to the senior opening pair of Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad to find their form. While youngsters Ayush Mhatre and Sarfaraz Khan showed flashes of brilliance at three and four, the openers looked shaky. Samson’s run of 6, 7 and 6 was particularly jarring for the fans, especially considering that he had arrived as a player of the T20 World Cup tournament. Despite battling for the top order, CSK have managed to post 200-plus totals in their last two outings. The main concern remains the bowling unit. The contrast between the two attacks could be the deciding factor. While CSK struggled to replace the injured Nathan Ellis, Delhi did admirably without Mitchell Starc. Lungi Ngidi excelled and his deceptive slower balls became the main talking point of the 2026 season. For Chennai, Matt Henry and Khaleel Ahmed found it difficult on a flat surface suitable for batting at home.
Even the celebrated spin department of ČSK lacks its usual bite. Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad struggled in the absence of a consistent partner and the management was yet to trust their 14.2 crore acquisition, Prashant Veer, with the ball.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Chennai, like most of the country, experienced showers during the past week. However, a full game is expected on Saturday with no threat of rain.
The Chepauk pitch is likely to be another batsman-friendly surface.
TEAM NEWS
If Dewald Brevis returns to the XI, he will likely replace Kartik Sharma. The 19-year-old Rajasthan wicketkeeper-batsman, who is also worth Rs 14.2 crore, has shown his talent but has found it difficult to make a lasting impact. Sarfaraz Khan, a late addition in the auction, has arguably been Chennai’s most consistent batsman so far.
CSK could potentially rest Noor Ahmad in favor of Akeal Hosein, although they traditionally prefer to back their existing spinners. Whether they would sacrifice a pacer to play both spinners remains a matter of intrigue.
Delhi Capitals may try to rebuild their top order by giving Nitish Rana a break. The left-hander has struggled for rhythm at No. 3 and the Capitals have ready-made alternatives in Karun Nair and Abhishek Porel. Otherwise, the visitors look like a settled and impressive group.

CSK vs DC PRESS WATCH: WHAT THEY SAID
CSK head coach Stephen Fleming has responded to the criticism and talks about being out of touch with the evolving landscape of T20 cricket.
“Criticism is fair when you fail. That’s part of the position. Look, I coach all year in two other competitions (SA20 and MLC) and do auctions for a lot of players. So it’s not like I just switch off and then come to the IPL with no idea where the game is going. In fact, it’s probably the other way around, the players spend more time studying T2. to serve the other teams that join the IPL.”
DC fast bowler T Natarajan said the mood in the camp is upbeat despite losing to Gujarat Titans by one run.
“Obviously the team feels emotional after a close loss, but it’s a long tournament and we’ve only had a few games. We’re a very close group and we’re like a family. We believe in supporting each other, staying positive and enjoying ourselves. We know we have the quality to make a big comeback.”
