Former India spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan has hit out at Yuzvendra Chahal, saying the Punjab Kings star should be behind bars for alleged vaping. The video, which has gone viral across social media platforms, is said to feature A Punjab Kings spinner using an e-cigarette during the team’s trip to Hyderabad.
In a clip shared online from Arshdeep Singh’s podcast, the leg-spinner can seemingly be seen trying to hide the act while sitting among teammates during the flight. However, India Today was unable to independently confirm the authenticity of the video or verify whether Chahal was actually vaping in the footage. The use and sale of e-cigarettes is prohibited in India.
A Twitter user posted the latest rumor suggesting that Arshdeep was banned from vlogging with the PBKS team and Chahal was let off with a stern warning.
This attracted the attention of Sivaramakrishnan, who slammed the PBKS spinner and asked why he was not punished. The former Indian cricketer also said that the fine of 25 per cent of the match fees is peanuts.
“Vape is banned in India. He should be behind bars. What’s the point of having laws and not enforcing them. 25% of match fees are peanuts. What if a normal person did that, what would be the action?” said Sivaramakrishnan on X.
Chahal vaping came after the Riyan Parag incident where Skipper RR was caught using an electronic cigarette in the dressing room during the match against PBKS.
Riyan was fined 25 percent for the match and was not banned from the competition.
BCCI IS HARD ON VAPING
BCCI has introduced a new set of guidelines for IPL teams and players where they have banned vaping in all venues, dressing rooms and dugouts.
“Instances of vaping in the dressing room and other restricted areas of tournament venues have been brought to BCCI’s attention. It is pertinent to note that vapes and e-cigarettes are prohibited under the applicable Indian laws. Any individual caught engaging in such behavior within the tournament premises is not only in breach of BCCI and IPL regulations, but may also commit a cognizable offense under the applicable statutory framework.”
“Accordingly, the use of vapes, e-cigarettes and all banned substances is strictly prohibited at all IPL tournaments, including dressing rooms, dugouts, team hotels and practice facilities,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia wrote.
It remains to be seen if any action will be taken against Chahal regarding the alleged vaping incident.
