Youth-suppressing regime will have to answer to people, says Rahul Gandhi

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday (3 September 2026) accused the Bihar government of using excessive force against protesting students and warned the BJP that any regime that suppresses the voice of the youth will eventually have to answer to the people.

Mr Gandhi made his remarks after meeting students and youth from Bihar, who he said were facing “horrendous police brutality”, demanding fair opportunities, a transparent examination system and their rights.

“Police lathis as well as AK-47 and pistol firing have caused injuries to many students,” Mr Gandhi said in a post on X. He claimed that a young man who wanted to join the army suffered an AK-47 bullet wound to his leg, shattering his “lifelong dream” of serving the country.

“Brutal Police Action”

Questioning the use of lathis and firearms against the students, Mr Gandhi said the government could not absolve itself of responsibility by blaming “a few low-ranking officials”. The police action, he said, was either the result of orders from above or a sign of “utter failure” by the administration.

“Irrespective of what the Bihar government does, I stand with these young people. I am ready to extend all possible help to them,” he said. “The BJP should remember: any regime that suppresses the voice of the youth must ultimately answer to the people. That day is not far,” he added.

“Your Struggle Is Not Alone”

Mr Gandhi also extended his support to a Dalit girl who is seeking action against those who allegedly assaulted her father. In a post on X, he said she was targeted for raising her voice for the rights of her community and students. He was responding to her plea for help in registering a case with the Delhi Police.

Referring to her struggle, Mr Gandhi said: “Your struggle is not alone. We will not stop until justice is served,” he said, accusing the Delhi Police of “inhuman brutality” against the students. He also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the alleged protection given to a person accused of assaulting her father.

“Will there be any action now or will you continue to protect someone?” asked Mr. Gandhi.
