Youth Congress protest at BJP state office creates tension

Tension prevailed at the BJP headquarters in Nampally on Monday as Youth Congress activists staged a protest, allegedly smearing black paint on one of the office gates and burning an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Youth Congress protest was held to condemn the alleged shuddhikaran ceremony held at a venue in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, where AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a public meeting. The protesters, led by Telangana Jakkidi Youth Congress president Shiva Charan Reddy, also sought the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the alleged use of firearms during a Congress-led protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi last month against the NEET question paper leak.

The police broke up the protest and took Shiva Charan Reddy, along with several other Youth Congress leaders and activists, into custody and shifted them to the police station. Later, in a retaliatory gesture, BJYM activists protested at Gandhi Bhavan – the Congress headquarters by throwing eggs. The police controlled the situation to prevent it from escalating into a big fight.

Reacting to the incident, Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar criticized the police and questioned the functioning of the state’s intelligence machinery.

Mr. Sanjay Kumar asked how the Youth Congress activists were able to apply black paint on the gate of the BJP office and burn the effigy outside the premises in broad daylight. He questioned whether the police and intelligence services were working effectively and claimed that the police had failed to provide adequate security to the state headquarters of the national political party. He demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the incident and their production before the court.
