‘Your 3D Cricketer’: Indian World Cup 2019 Team Member Announces Retirement
Vijay Shankar and Virat Kohli (PTI Photo) Indian all-rounder Vijay Shankar has announced his retirement from all forms of Indian cricket, ending a professional journey that saw him represent the national side in both ODIs and T20Is, including the 2019 ODI World Cup.A reliable player in domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu, Shankar has played 12 ODIs and nine T20Is for India, scoring a combined 324 runs while taking nine wickets. He was part of the Indian squad for the 2019 World Cup after being selected ahead of Ambati Rayudu in a decision that created much debate at the time. Shankar appeared in three matches during the tournament before suffering a toe injury that ruled him out and paved the way for Mayank Agarwal to join the team as a replacement. In a heartfelt retirement statement shared on social media, Shankar reflected on his long association with the sport and the memories he made during his career.“THANK YOU so much. Cricket is my life. I started playing when I was 10 and 25 years later I am grateful and blessed to have played at every level and at the highest level. Representing our country will always be one of my proudest and happiest moments,” he wrote.Shankar also revealed that even as he retires from domestic cricket and the IPL, he intends to continue exploring opportunities to stay involved with the game.“I have decided to quit playing domestic cricket and IPL to pursue new opportunities and play more cricket. Thank you will not be enough for letting me do what I love. I am eternally grateful. Thank you BCCI and Indian Cricket Team – many learnings, countless memories and various inspirations!”The all-rounder was fond of recalling some of the defining moments of his international career, particularly his memorable first wicket in the World Cup and the final over bowling in India’s 500th ODI.“Representing the country will be my highest badge of honour. Last bowling in India’s 500th ODI in Nagpur and my first ball, first wicket in World Cup 2019 are moments I will cherish forever!” he added.In the IPL, Shankar appeared in 78 matches representing Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans. He was also part of the Gujarat Titans team that won the 2022 title.At the domestic level, Shankar enjoyed considerable success with Tamil Nadu, leading the side to triumphs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Deodhar Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy before turning to Tripura last season.
