The 23 -year -old officer commissioned the army for only six months, Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari from the Scouts Sikkim, lost his life and saved his colleagues a soldier during an operational task in northern Sikkim 22 May 2025.
The military officials said the officer led the opening patrol of the route towards the tactical operational base (TOB) in Sikki – a key place ready for future commitment.
“Around 11:00 in the morning, Agniveer Stephan Subba – a member of the patrol – lost the position of bridge logs and was swept by a strong mountain stream. Lieutenant Tiwari instinctively jumped into treacherous waters to save Agniveer without being hesitation,” he said. Immediately followed by another soldier Naik Pukar Katel. Together they managed to save the drowning of Agniveer.
Lieutenant Tiwari, however, was tragically swept by a strong current. Despite the desperate effort of his patrol, his body was 800 meters downstream until 11:30 in the morning, said the clerk and added that the young officer’s action is a radiant example of the basic values of the army and the unbreakable bond between officers and men.
Lieutenant Tiwari survived his parents and sister.
