Beijing (Reuters) -President Xi JinPing will gather more than 20 world leaders next week at the Regional Security Forum in China in a strong show of global southern solidarity at the age of Donald Trump while helping to intervene Russia to pull another diplomatic coup.
In addition to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the leaders of the Central Asia, the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia were invited to the Summit in Shanghai (SCO), which will take place in the northern port city of Tianjin from 31 to August 1 to September.
At the summit, the first visit to the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in China will be in more than seven years, as both neighbors are working on further disposal of tension rooted by deadly border clashes in 2020.
Modi last shared the same scene with XI and Putin at last year’s Brics summit in Kazan, Kazan, Russia, although Western leaders turned their backs to the Russian leader in the middle of the war in Ukraine. Russian Embassy officials in Nový Delhi said last week that Moscow hopes that trilateral conversations with China and India will soon take place.
“XI will want to take advantage of this summit as an opportunity to show how post-American international order begins to look, and that all the efforts of the White House since January to face China, Iran, Russia, and now India did not have the intended effect,” said Eric Olander, editor-in-chief of Chinese global South Project, research agency.
“Just look at how much BRICS rattled (US President) Donald Trump, which is exactly what these groups are designed.”
This year’s summit will be the largest since the SCO was founded in 2001, the Chinese Foreign Ministry official said last week and called the block “an important force in building a new type of international relations”.
Block focused on security, which began as a group of six Eurosian nations, has expanded to 10 permanent members and 16 countries of dialogue and observer in recent years. Its accession has also expanded from safety and counter -terrorism to economic and military cooperation.
Analysts argue that expansion is on the agenda for many participants, but agrees that the block has not brought considerable results of cooperation over the years and that China values the optics of global southern solidarity against the United States at the time of irregular creation of politics and geopolitical flow.
“What is the exact vision that SCO represents and its practical implementation is somewhat unclear. It is a platform that has a growing permission power that helps with a narrative projection,” said Kewalrans, chairman of the Indo-Pacific Research Program in Bangalore.
“However, SCO efficiency remains very limited in dealing with the essential security issues.”
The friction remains among the main members of India and Pakistan. The meeting of the SCO defense ministers was unable to accept a joint statement after India raised objections and said it had omitted a reference to a deadly attack on April 22 to Hindu tourists in Kashmir, India, leading to the worst struggle for decades between India and Pakistan.
The new Delhi also refused to join the SCO of Israeli attacks on the Member State Iran in early June.
However, the recent detention between India and China after five years of increased borderline friction, as well as renewed pressure on the New Delhi tariff, manages expectations for a positive meeting between XI and modi on the edge of the summit.
“It is likely that (new Delhi) will swallow its pride and will insert this year’s SCO problems in an effort to maintain dynamics in Détente with China, which is now a key priority of Modi,” Olander said.
Analysts expect both parties to announce further incremental border measures, such as troops, relaxation of trade and visa restrictions, cooperation in new areas, including climate and wider government and involvement of people and people.
Despite the lack of material political announcement of the summit, experts warn that the appeal of the block on the global southern country should not be underestimated.
“This summit is about optics, really strong optics,” Olander added.
Modi is expected to leave China after the summit, while Putin will remain at the Second World War a military show in Beijing later in the week for an unusually long magic outside Russia.
