World Cup hero Deepti Sharma fetched the top prize in the Women’s Premier League mega auction list on Thursday, November 27. Sharma, who won the Player of the Tournament award at the recently concluded Women’s ODI World Cup, has been RTMed (Right to Match) by UP Warriorz, the team that released her earlier but still wanted the option to bring her back.
This is only Sharma’s second time participating in the auction. She was earlier bought by Warriorz for Rs 2.60 crore. On Thursday, Deepti found out that Delhi Capitals were bidding for her at a base price of Rs 50 crore. Since no other team showed interest in the player, UP Warriorz RTM pegged her at the same value, which meant they asked DC to raise their offer if they really wanted her.
WPL Auction: Live Updates
The DC camp at the auction table, which included Sourav Ganguly and Partha Jindal, decided to bid a hefty sum of Rs 3.20 crore as they believed that raising the price to that level would deter UP from returning to the competition. However, UP immediately raised the paddle, clearly signaling their determination to retain the player’s services.
With her worth rising to Rs 3.20 crore, Deepti has become the joint second highest paid player in the history of the Women’s Premier League. Smriti Mandhana continues to hold the top spot in this list after being bought by Royal Challengers Bengaluru for Rs 3.40 crore in the inaugural edition of the tournament.
Deepti wasn’t the only one who bagged big on the marquee list. Amelia Kerr (Rs 3 crore), Sophie Devine (Rs 2 crore), Meg Lanning (Rs 1.90 crore) and Laura Wolvaardt (Rs 1.10 crore) were the other players to cross the 1 crore mark in the marquee group.
Australia captain Alyssa Healy was surprisingly the only player left unsold from the marquee list.
