The artificial intelligence system (AI) to prevent the death of elephants on railway lines within Madukkarai in the Forest Coimbatore division helped from its introduction in February 2024 approximately 2,800 safe transitions of wild elephants.
According to the forest department, the system generated over 6,000 Wild Elephant Caution near railway lines or exceeded them. In fact, the total number of generated warnings is over 10,000, including the detection of movements of other animals such as Gaur, Deer, Leopard, Dhole and even King Cobra.
The system works with the support of the towers mounted on the camera installed on the sides of the railway lines – “A” and “B” passing through the reserve forests in a series of Madukkarai and joining Tamil Nadu and Keraral.
District Forest Officer N. Jayaraj said that after the introduction of the early warning system, no incident that collided with trains was reported in the section.
At night, elephants detected a system -based AI -based warning system near the railway line.
Reserved team of 20 employees for patrols of embarrassing sites quickly responds when the AI -based system detects the movement of elephants near Stop and generates warnings. Four employees manage the control and command center.
“A total of 15 employees will be on patrols at night,” he said.
The alerts are also sent to the Masters stations of the nearest railway stations and locomots of trains passing through the reserve forest are informed about the presence of elephants near the tracks to control the speed of trains.
