
Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) celebrated World Disability Day with the theme Disability: A Right, not a Request. The event highlighted resilience, inclusion and empowerment with inspirational talks from two speakers who overcame significant physical challenges to excel in their professional fields.
PA Abhinand, an assistant professor in the Department of Bioinformatics who lives with spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic disorder characterized by progressive weakness and wasting of skeletal muscles, has published 20 research articles and authored two book chapters. He emphasized the need for free nationwide access to the SMA diagnostic test to enable early diagnosis, early intervention and affordable treatment.
Sushmitha Murali, born with a physical disability, is a researcher at the Sri Ramachandra Faculty of Audiology and Speech Pathology. As a recipient of the UGC National Scholarship for Persons with Disabilities, he is actively involved in disability advocacy, participating in panel discussions and offering support to visually impaired students. Dean, Medical College K. Balaji Singh, Special Officer Roopa Nagarajan and Prof. Prakash Boominathan attended the event, a press release said.
