When a team lifts the World Cup trophy, the script usually writes itself. Celebration, admiration and collective pride follow in equal measure. However, India’s historic defense of the Men’s T20 World Cup on home soil has met with something rather different.
Less than a week after the triumph, a curious story has emerged, questioning the value of the victory and leading to an unprecedented amount of criticism. the man who drove it, Suryakumar Yadav.

Another T20 World Cup now sits in India’s cabinet, but for a section of fans, the moment has somehow diminished. Some argue that India’s influence on the modern game is too strong and call the triumph a fraud. Suryakumar led India’s new era of T20 giants to the World Cup title. (PTI photo)
Others insist that the cricketing world must unite to limit India’s dominance. It’s an extraordinary response to what should have been a straightforward sporting achievement. The player who absorbs the onslaught of control amid the noise is the captain himself.
KEY CONTRIBUTIONS
statistical, Suryakumar’s tournament was far from a failure. He finished as India’s third-highest run-scorer, amassing 242 runs from nine innings at an average of 30.25 and a strike rate of 136.72, including one half-century. They may not be headline numbers, but they came at moments when the team needed calm the most.
His most distinctive knock came in the very opening game against the USA. India slumped to 77/6 and were staring at a humiliating defeat as the T20 World Cup hosts seemed to be chasing the team again.
However, fresh from his Player of the series win against New Zealand, Suryakumar took charge to rescue his team with an unbeaten 84 off 49 deliveries, taking the innings to a respectable 161/9. Suryakumar had a mixed outing with the bat in the T20 World Cup 2026. (PTI Photo)
The knock eventually secured a comfortable 29-run victory and ensured that India won their opening T20 World Cup match as hosts for the first time. The remainder of the contest did not produce another major innings from the skipper, yet his contributions remained quietly significant.
A steady 32 off 29 against Pakistan on a tricky surface ensured there was no collapse in the middle overs. A later tally of 34 off 28 against the Netherlands provided stability amid a steady fall of wickets. A blistering 33 off just 13 balls against Zimbabwe ensured India maintained a relentless scoring rate en route to a formidable total.
None of these innings stood out among the game’s flashy big scores, and their value often slipped below the surface of the scorecards and highlight reels.
STRANGE CHECK
Despite these contributions, Suryakumar’s credentials as India’s captain have been repeatedly questioned since the World Cup victory. Much of the criticism has come from his wider batting numbers since the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup triumph.
In his last 42 innings, he scored 932 runs at an average of 25.88 with a strike rate of 152.03, making six half-centuries. Those aren’t the dominant figures fans have come to expect from one of the format’s most imaginative batters. However, the history of cricket offers numerous examples of captains who have lifted trophies despite meager personal returns.
Consider MS Dhoni during the inaugural ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2007. The legendary skipper did not produce a single outstanding innings during this tournament, instead chipping in handily as India cruised to the title.
A similar pattern emerged during the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy where Dhoni managed just 27 runs from the two innings he batted and still led India to silverware. Crucially, these campaigns never led to calls for his resignation.
BEYOND EVALUATION
Leadership in T20 cricket is often judged by instinct as much as numbers, and in that respect Suryakumar’s captaincy has quietly flourished. He has shown a willingness to make uncomfortable decisions.
During the match against South Africa, he benched vice-captain Axar Patel to bring in Washington Sundar, given the number of left-handers in the Proteas playing XI. Although the move did not yield results, it underlined the captain’s bravery to make major tactical changes even for a big match.
The same flexibility was evident during the Super 8 stage when Sanju Samson was reintroduced to the playing XI to balance the heavily left-handed top order. Ironically, Suryakumar himself had earlier questioned where Samson would rank when asked about the batter at a press conference. But when the composition of the team called for adjustment, he was quick to acknowledge the oversight and act decisively, a change that helped reshape India’s campaign.
TRUST AND COMMUNICATION
The Indian skipper also faced criticism for not using Jasprit Bumrah in a big way with the new ball. Yet his careful spin of the pace spearhead, whose overs are often worth their weight in gold, especially in must-win matches against the West Indies and England, eventually paved the way for India’s title.
Not just bold decisions, Suryakumar Yadav also continued to support his players in difficult phases and stood firm behind Abhishek Sharma during a slender run that eventually culminated in a blistering half-century in the final. Surya backed his players to impress and they made it big. (PTI photo)
This unwavering confidence coupled with clear communication behind closed doors has quietly helped revive the fortunes of several players in the side, including Sanju Samson.
Even the question of succession, given that Suryakumar is already 35 years old, highlights the impracticality of the criticism leveled against him. Hardik Pandya was not seriously considered for the role by the management, while Axar Patel remains relatively new as vice-captain and is still preparing for greater responsibilities.
TROPHY SPEAKS
Ultimately, the most compelling evidence of Suryakumar’s captaincy credentials lies in the glittering trophy that India lifted at the end of the tournament. Winning a World Cup, let alone defending it on home soil, is rarely a fluke.
For now, Suryakumar Yadav is in the unusual position of a World Cup winner whose achievements are dissected rather than celebrated. But history has a habit of remembering trophies more clearly than temporary criticism.
And long after the debates die down, the record will still show that India became the first team to successfully defend their World Cup title under his watch.
