Travis Head dismissed public narratives suggesting Australia’s players were not sufficiently interested in the T20 format following their early exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, insisting the team was fully committed during the campaign.
Australia are out of the T20 World Cup in the group stage. After defeating Ireland and Oman, Australia suffered back-to-back losses to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, denying them a place in the Super Eights and drawing criticism at home.
Head dismissed any suggestion that Australia was favoring other formats over T20 cricket.
“The players’ point of view and the team’s point of view, there’s 100 per cent commitment to everything,” Head told reporters in Adelaide on Tuesday.
“There’s no format that plays bigger than any other. You’re playing a World Cup that we’ve won and we’re planning as best we can.”
“I think it’s probably more public opinion that a lot more people love Test cricket more than T20 cricket.”
The left-hander acknowledged that Australia’s failure to progress would inevitably invite scrutiny.
“A lot of people would draw their long bows when Australian cricket teams don’t win,” Head said.
“We weren’t good enough. So everyone can draw their own conclusion, but we know that as a team we were fully committed.”
Head said the ICC tournament presented unique challenges and argued Australia simply failed to deliver at key moments.
“We talk about it a lot, playing World Cups and tournaments,” he said.
“But normally we’ve been pretty good in those situations.
“Some teams probably aren’t as high as they could be and it’s hard to navigate, it’s challenging. You see good teams slip by all the time.”
“We were on that side of things where we weren’t good enough at the right time and we weren’t able to get to the Super Eights.
“Obviously, I think in the last World Cups we’ve hit a few roadblocks along the way, we’ve found a way through it and we’ve been able to work things out as we go and find ourselves at the pointy end of the tournament.
“It wasn’t supposed to be this year.
Head also pointed out the unpredictable nature of the shortest format compared to Test cricket.
“Sometimes T20 cricket can be, not luck of the draw, but you have five days to win a Test match and usually the best team wins,” he said.
“I think sometimes a player can win it on a night in T20 cricket, so it’s a bit unpredictable.
“That’s why you see a lot more unpredictable results and in the Test format you probably see the same three or four teams around the Test World Cup mark and who are competing for those trophies.”
Head will now play for South Australia in the next round of the Sheffield Shield before traveling to the Indian Premier League.
