World Cup T20: New Zealand survive Scotland scare, stay alive in semi-final race

Izzy Sharp’s maiden T20I half-century fired New Zealand to a six-wicket victory over Scotland as they kept their 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup hopes alive. Brooke Halliday’s 101-run stand helped the White Ferns recover from a shaky start to successfully chase down 132 and keep their qualification dreams intact.

Darcey Carter earlier played with an unbeaten 72 and Kathryn Bryce took two for 13 but Scotland’s hopes of a first World Cup semi-final were ended.

New Zealand won the toss and placed first on a baking day at the Bristol County Ground, with Sophie Devine returning from illness and Lea Tahuhu taking part in her first match of the tournament. Carter got the ball with a cut for four in the first over and found the boundary with ease in the early stages. She smashed Jesse Kerr’s six in the fifth over and followed it up with a four as she led Scotland to 45 for no loss after the powerplay.

Katherine Fraser (7) was the first to depart, having earlier been dropped by Isabella Gaze, with Tahuhu (1/19) claiming her 100th T20I wicket. Captain Kathryn Bryce was then dismissed by Amelia Kerr for five as the New Zealand bowlers defended.

Sarah Bryce supported Carter valiantly and found her flow after being bowled by Nancy Patel on 13 before the opener reached her half-century in the 14th over, but she appeared to be struggling with the extreme heat of the drinks.

Carter’s partner was trapped LBW on the first ball after the break, Devin’s first delivery of the day, for 25, and Ailsa Lister (2) and Megan McColl (1) departed cheaply as Scotland’s innings threatened to grind to a halt.

Two boundaries were taken from Patel’s 18th over before Priyanaz Chatterji (12) and Pippa Sproul (0) fell in the following set to Amelia Kerr (3/17), who was a two-wicket maiden.

Carter took 10 off the final over to finish on 72 not out, becoming the competition’s top run-scorer, with New Zealand all out for 132.

OSTRÉ AND HALLIDAY SEPTEMBER AFTER SHOCKING START

New Zealand stuttered at the start of their chase, losing three wickets in the over as Kathryn Bryce (2/13) dismissed Amelia Kerr (2) and Gaze (16) while Devine (1) bowled Rachel Slater.

Promoted to number three, Sharp and Halliday kept rebuilding, bringing their 50-run partnership to 48 balls in the 13th over, with their side 78 for three.

The acceleration came after the 14th drinks break when Halliday (41*) hit Rainey for consecutive fours.

Fraser was followed by a pair of boundaries, with the White Ferns requiring 25 runs from the last four overs.

Sharp brought up the maiden T20I half-century when she blasted Kirstie Gordon for consecutive boundaries as the winning line moved into sight.

A six over long-on followed before Slater (2/22) bowled her for 62, with the partnership worth 101.

Maddy Green hit her first ball for four and the bye got the job done as New Zealand kept their World Cup dreams alive, moving to third in the table and two points behind England and the West Indies, who play each other in their game.
