World Cup: Rowdy Mexico fans camp outside team hotel, giving Ecuador a sleepless night

Mexico’s round of 32 match against Ecuador hasn’t even started yet, but the home fans have already started to make their presence felt. Hundreds of Mexican fans gathered outside an Ecuadorean hotel in Mexico City late Monday night, creating a raucous atmosphere with chants, horns, loudspeakers and drums ahead of a World Cup knockout match.

Videos from outside the team hotel circulated widely on social media during the build-up to the game. The rally came after reports spread online encouraging supporters to turn up outside an Ecuadorian hotel and create enough noise to disturb the team’s sleep ahead of Mexico’s Round of 32 clash against the South American side.

Several videos that emerged online showed the Ecuadorian players watching from hotel windows as fans continued to chant below. The incident sparked debate online, with some supporters calling it classic football gamesmanship, while others questioned whether attempts to disrupt an opponent’s sleep crossed the line ahead of a World Cup knockout match.

Mexico enters the match with the weight of expectation as the hosts of the tournament. Javier Aguirre’s side topped their group with three wins from three games and are yet to concede a goal in the competition.

Ecuador, meanwhile, arrived with momentum of their own after managing to take one of the tournament’s surprises into the knockout stages. Coach Sebastian Beccacece brushed aside fears of outside distractions and insisted his side are focused on the challenge ahead.

Mexico and Ecuador face each other in a round of 32 match later on Tuesday night in Mexico City, with a place in the last 16 up for grabs.

Meanwhile, the Round of 32 has already seen two big results. Germany and the Netherlands were knocked out of the tournament by Paraguay and Morocco on Monday night.
