Workshop on Evaluation Terminology in Indian Languages begins at CIIL
A five-day in-house workshop on ‘Overview of glossary terms in testing and assessment in Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Odia, Hindi and Telugu languages’ began at the National Testing Service-India (NTS-I) of the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) here on Monday. The workshop will last until May 22.
The program aims to revise, clarify and standardize technical terminology related to testing and assessment practices across Indian languages in line with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework 2023.
The workshop brought together linguists, educators, translators, and academic reviewers from universities and institutions across the country along with NTS–I faculty members. The initiative seeks to ensure conceptual clarity, linguistic accuracy and consistency in educational terminology used in Indian languages, a press release said.
The workshop is significant in the context of multilingual education and the emphasis on Indian languages in teaching, learning and assessment under NEP 2020. The standardized terminology is expected to support teachers, curriculum developers, translators, researchers and students while improving the quality of testing and assessment practices.
The current revision process follows an earlier phase in which NTS-I resource staff translated technical terms from English into various planned Indian languages. During the workshop, experts will critically examine and refine these translated terms through joint discussions and consultations, the report added.
PR Dharmesh Fernandez, Professor and Deputy Director, CIIL, who inaugurated the workshop, emphasized the need for linguistically consistent and academically sound terminology to enhance inclusive education practices.
He emphasized CIIL’s role in supporting multilingual academic resources and language research.
Aiswariya Shajan, Malayalam Resource at NTS-India, Murali Mohana N., General Officer, NTS-India were present. The workshop is attended by distinguished scholars and experts from leading universities and educational institutions across the country.
Pankaj Dwivedi, Assistant Director, CIIL and Officer-in-Charge of NTS-India is coordinating the programme.
