Working closely with stakeholders to minimize public nuisance, says KMRL
The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) on Wednesday said it is working closely with various stakeholders to minimize public inconvenience caused by the construction of Phase II corridor connecting Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium and Infopark via Kakkanad.
KMRL said in a statement that the construction activities inevitably caused temporary inconvenience to road users at certain places. “KMRL works closely with transport authorities, local authorities and other stakeholders to minimize public inconvenience and continuously address issues related to traffic management, road condition, drainage and public safety,” it said. The response comes amid widespread criticism of the metro works causing severe traffic jams on the 10.58-km stretch, especially at Palarivattom and Kakkanad.
KMRL said that though it had submitted a proposal to get around ₹7 crore for strengthening and improving the secondary roads, which were widely used for traffic diversion and construction-related movement, no special funds were sanctioned for the purpose. “However, KMRL is carrying out maintenance and rehabilitation measures in coordination with concerned agencies to the extent possible with special focus on ensuring safe movement of road users during the construction period,” the statement said.
KMRL said it is targeting to complete the work by June 2027, followed by testing, commissioning and system integration activities to bring the corridor into service by August 2027.
“Weekly review meetings involving all stakeholders are conducted to assess progress and address issues on priority. During the monsoon season, inspections are conducted even more frequently to ensure uninterrupted progress and prompt rectification of issues at the field level,” it said.
